Rain makes wheat, wheat makes crust; outdoor pies a summer must
Growing up in the southwest suburbs, Memorial Day weekend usually meant a cookout with the neighbors. The Fourth of July was sometimes the same, but more importantly the days leading up to it were highlighted by a parade (hate ’em) in Evergreen Park and then watching the nearby fireworks (love ’em) from my grandparents’ porch. They’re the types of traditions of which American childhood summers are made.
