A 5-year-old girl from Orland Park died the evening of Thursday, Jan. 23, following a vehicular collision at the intersection of 151st and Harlem Avenue.

The crash occurred around 9:40 p.m. according to Orland Park Police Lt. Ken Rosinski, and Evelyn Thomas was reported deceased at 10:28 p.m. and identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Rosinski said a sedan containing three occupants — including Thomas — was traveling northbound on Harlem Avenue and turned westbound onto 151st Street when it was struck by an SUV with one occupant traveling southbound. Police think the light was yellow at the time, Rosinski said.

All occupants of those two vehicles were transported to the hospital, but no one else had injuries thought to be life-threatening, Rosinski said. A third vehicle was involved after one of the vehicles involved in the collision came to rest up against it, but no one in that vehicle was injured, Rosinski added.

Accident reconstruction was done at the scene from around 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., Rosinski said. The crash was still considered under investigation as of the morning of Jan. 24, and no citations had been issued in the collision at that time.

“We don’t believe alcohol or drugs were factor,” Rosinski added of the preliminary investigation.

Rosinski declined to comment on the relation of the other occupants in the vehicle to Thomas at this time.

An autopsy was scheduled for Jan. 24, according to a spokesperson for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
