The Orland Fire Protection District Board of Trustees named an interim acting fire chief at its regular meeting in response to Fire Chief Ken Brucki’s reported request for a leave of absence.

The Fire Board voted unanimously Aug. 25 to appoint Battalion Chief Michael Schofield as the interim acting fire chief for the duration of Brucki’s absence.

Brucki requested a leave of absence with pay Aug. 21 for an indefinite period of time because of “personal issues,” district spokesperson Ray Hanania said at the meeting.

A longtime physical education teacher — and girls swimming and water polo coach — for Sandburg, Caliendo (nee Schofield) died Saturday, Oct. 4.

After experiencing back pain in early August 2014, Judeh spent several weeks visiting doctors, before finally ending up in an emergency room, undergoing surgery and learning he had a spinal cord abscess. He had suffered significant nerve damage, resulting in paralysis from the chest down.

A 64-year-old Tinley Park man allegedly stabbed a manager at an automotive center in Orland Park during a dispute over a delayed oil change. J. Luis Barrios, of 16549 Prairie Drive, was charged with aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony, after he stabbed the 37-year-old man with a pocket knife Saturday, March 18, at Sears Auto Center, 2 Orland Square Drive, according to a press release issued the next day by the Orland Park Police Department.

Plans to construct a Mariano’s grocery store and a residential housing development at Orland Park Crossing are underway after special use permits, landscaping plans and resubdivision plans were approved by unanimous votes at the Orland Park Village Board’s regular meeting Monday, Aug. 4.

The Bradford Group is slated to construct a Mariano’s grocery store and parking lot at what is currently 14131, 14201 and 14203 LaGrange Road. The grocery store is designed to be 72,925 square feet, and an 8-foot fence is to separate Mariano’s from residential property east of the grocery store.

An investigation into a fencing ring for stolen merchandise reportedly led to the arrests of two men from Orland Park and two individuals. Jamel Zayyad, 33, of 12561 Anand Brook Drive, was charged with wire fraud, possession of stolen property and continuing financial crimes enterprise, according to a press release issued Friday, June 29, by the Office of Deputy Chief Patrick Collins with the Village of Wilmette. Ahmad Zayyad, 65, of the same address, was charged with possession of a firearm.
